Solution to Leyburn Road Traffic Problems: Mini Roundabout to go?

8.00.00pm GMT Mon 4th Jan 2010

When the Highways Department introduced major changes to the Thompson Street/Fitzwilliam Drive area some years ago, they thought that the mini-roundabout at the Leyburn Road/Fitzwilliam Drive junction would help with traffic flow. In fact, what it did was to cause Leyburn Road to become a rat-run and to be blocked with traffic every rush hour. Local residents were often stuck in their drives

Since that time, North Road ward Lib Dem Councillors have been complaining to Highways on behalf of residents. Now, finally we have been promised that changes will be made.

The mini-roundabout will be removed, giving priority at the junction to Fitzwilliam Drive traffic. This should deter rush-hour traffic from using Leyburn Road as a short-cut.

Other planned alterations should make it more difficult for traffic to go through the NO ENTRY sign into the South end of Leyburn Road.

These plans will be circulated to nearby residents for consultation before any final decision is made.
